Gulls

January 25th, 2010 · No Comments

Another trawl through photographs taken last year produced several of gulls at Rufford Country Park. These have been “tweaked” in Photoshop for dramatic effect, much more than I usually do.

Tufted Ducks

January 17th, 2010 · No Comments

Walked by the River Trent from Bulcote to Burton Joyce this morning. A flock of 100+ tufted ducks was swimming on the swollen river. Some of the time they were in several smaller groups, but at one point almost all of them were swimming upstream ‘line astern’.

Fieldfare and Wild Orchids

January 16th, 2010 · No Comments

Fieldfare have been visiting the garden during the long period of cold weather, looking for berries. I’ve managed a few long-distance photographs of them. I’ve also added some of the pictures of wild orchids I took during a Wildlife Trust walk near Nottingham last summer.

I’ve built up quite a backlog of photographs, and going through some, I found these of mute swans with cygnets taking a ride on a parent’s back, taken at the end of May last year, on the Trent near Hoveringham, Nottinghamshire.

I’ve found time at last to add pages to the insects section – mayflies, damselflies and a Southern Hawker dragonfly, all photographed earlier this year in Nottinghamshire.

Long-tailed tits

December 4th, 2009 · No Comments

Walked down to the Trent this afternoon, and came across a small group of long-tailed tits in the hedgerow betwen Bulcote Farm and the river. Unusually, they didn’t all immediately fly off, and I was able to get a few photoraphs, which you can view here.

Spike Milligan

November 1st, 2009 · No Comments

On a recent visit to Liverpool, I bought a book about Old Time Music Halls from a charity shop in Tuebrook.

The book has a Foreword by Spike Milligan, and I was reminded of a short poem I wrote the night I heard that he had died.

The poem can be found here.

Tern, Wagtail & Ducklings

May 24th, 2009 · No Comments

A very short walk beside the Trent at Burton Joyce yesterday yielded new pages and additions. In the space of 20 minutes, we saw amongst other thingsĀ a heron, a pied wagtail, several common terns, Greylag and Canada Geese with young and a female mallard with ducklings.

Follow the links above to the new pages and additions.
